Magical Advent in Salzburg

Contemplation & romance at traditional Advent markets & customs in the city of Mozart

Clinking cold nights, darker days and the year drawing to a close - when Advent begins, we long for contemplation and romantic time out from the hustle and bustle before Christmas. Especially in the beautiful baroque city of Salzburg, it is worth visiting a Christmas market to get into the pre-Christmas mood. Lights twinkle everywhere, the scent of chestnuts, punch and all kinds of delicacies fills the air and traditional carols and tower bells round off the romantic ambience perfectly.

A must during Advent: a visit to the Salzburg Christmas market

The historic Salzburg Christmas Market on the Domplatz and Residenzplatz is an absolute must-see during Advent in Salzburg. Known as the world's most beautiful Advent market, the Christkindlmarkt attracts almost a million visitors every year from the end of November until New Year's Day. Around 100 stalls offer delicious delicacies such as farmer's doughnuts, bosna, roasted almonds and mulled wine as well as gifts, decorative items and much more.

There is also a varied program, first and foremost the Krampus run through the Christmas market. Christmas readings, concerts by choirs in front of Salzburg Cathedral, a visit from the Christ Child, the sound of the tower brass band and other events also ensure a magical experience in Salzburg's pre-Christmas Old Town.

Pre-Christmas place to be for families: Hellbrunn Advent magic

Pre-Christmas place to be for families: Hellbrunn Advent magic
The Hellbrunn Advent Magic is especially recommended for families with children. From the end of November until Christmas, the grounds around Hellbrunn Palace are transformed into a Christmas fairyland. Countless conifers decorated with huge red baubles and fairy lights, the palace façade decorated as an Advent calendar and inviting stalls with various arts and crafts enchant young and old alike.

There are numerous child-friendly stations, especially for children: a Christmas train, lots of wild animals, a Christmas post office, sausages and bread on a stick from the campfire, a gnome village, and much more. In between, you can treat yourself to delicacies such as a typical Salzburg bratwurst or visit one of the highlights such as the illuminated water features in the water gardens.

Winter magic at the Festungsadvent, Sternadvent and on Mirabellplatz

If you are looking for an extraordinarily romantic atmosphere during Advent, the Festungsadvent at Salzburg Fortress is just the place for you. As you walk up to the castle, Herrnhut stars illuminate the Festungsgasse. In the castle courtyard, various stalls with arts and crafts, culinary delights and more invite you to take a leisurely stroll and enjoy. There is also an exciting program for children with cookie baking, Christmas crafts etc. The highlight of the Advent market: the stunning view of the wintry Salzburg Old Town below.

The many alleyways of the old town also offer a magical glow of lights during Advent. Directly in the famous Getreidegasse, an alley leads to a small but beautiful Advent market, the Sternadvent. In the Sternarkaden and directly in front of the famous Sternbräu, the Sternadvent invites visitors who want to experience a quieter atmosphere. In addition to a living nativity scene with sheep, rabbits & more, there are several market stalls as well as Salzburg specialties accompanied by relaxing, atmospheric music. A little further away from the Old Town, the smaller Advent market on Mirabellplatz in front of Mirabell Palace offers a romantic pre-Christmas atmosphere with various treats, handicrafts and accessories.

Advent in Salzburg: a time of customs and traditions

The pre-Christmas period in Salzburg is characterized by many traditions and customs. In addition to the Krampus and Perchten runs and the traditional Christmas markets, Salzburg's Advent singing in particular has a long history. First performed as a new genre in cold rooms in 1946, it is now presented in the Grosses Festspielhaus. Contemplative music from the Alpine region, shepherd children, actors and co. enchant around 36,000 listeners every year. The central theme is the biblical story of Rabbi Jacob "Fear not!".

What should not be missing at Christmas besides the Christmas tree? A nativity scene, of course. In the city of Salzburg, there are therefore a number of artistically crafted nativity scenes to admire in various churches and places of worship, such as Salzburg Cathedral.
